Norway

Norway’s stunning and diverse landscapes, coupled with its film-friedly govenment make it a popular location for filmmakers.

Filming in Norway

Looking for snowy mountains and breathtaking scenery? While Southern Europe is experiencing less and less snow in winter season, Mid/North Norway is still a snow guaranteed destination in the winter period. A perfect canvas for epic running footage or outdoor campaigns.

Northern Norway is a great place to visit any time of year. During winter, you can experience the Northern Lights. North of the polar circle, the sun is up all night during summer – a phenomenon known as the Midnight sun.

Film-making in Norway presents a wide range of opportunities, from breathtaking natural landscapes to modern urban settings. In Western Norway you can reach beaches and amazing coast lines, snowy mountains, epic fjords and lush forests in same day. All within a few hours drive.

Climate

Norway features a diverse climate shaped by its coastal geography and mountainous terrain. Coastal areas experience milder winters, influenced by the North Atlantic Current, while inland regions have a more continental climate with colder winters and warmer summers. Average annual temperatures vary from -10C* / 14F* to 28C* / 82F* (depending on the region).

Thanks to the temperate waters of the Gulf Stream, Norway has a much warmer and milder climate than other parts of the world

at the same latitude, such as Alaska, Greenland, and Siberia. The coldest areas in the winter are often inland or far to the north. Norway stretches from 57° to 78° north, so the climate varies a lot. There are great variations between north, south, inland and coast.

In general, coastal areas have relatively mild and wet winters (but with snow in the mountains), while the inland regions have cold winters with plenty of snow, and hot and relatively dry summers, especially in the east of the country. Here, the temperatures normally lie around 20 degrees during summer.

The northernmost parts, within the Arctic Circle, undergo extreme Arctic conditions with long, dark winters and brief, sunlit summers. Norway’s climate is dynamic, with variations between coastal, inland, and Arctic regions, reflecting its geographical complexity.

Tax Rebate

Norway’s film production incentive offers a 25% cash rebate on local spend, awarded to the highest ranking film and TV-projects in each annual application round. Qualifications for the incentive include a cultural and production test, as well as criteria on the size of the project. The film incentive is administered by the Norwegian Film Institute. Applicable for film and TV productions with international distribution. The 2024 application window has now closed. The evaluation period is 6-8 weeks, with the incentive being awarded to the highest ranking projects in each round.

The primary production company or an authorized representative can apply for the grant. The main producer must meet the requirement of having produced at least one feature film, one drama series, or one documentary series within the last five years. Additionally, the production must have had significant distribution.

Applications should be submitted before production begins in Norway. They must be submitted using the online application form provided on the Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) website, either in Norwegian or English. Applications will only be processed once all required documents are submitted. For additional details, refer to NFI’s Applicant Guide.
