Morocco

From the bustling streets of Marrakech and the ancient medinas of Fez to the spectacular Atlas Mountains, sweeping Sahara Desert and beautiful Atlantic coastline, Morocco offers an extraordinary variety of filming locations, all within easy reach of Europe.

Filming in Morocco

Morocco has long been one of North Africa’s most established filming destinations, attracting international feature films, television productions, commercials and music videos.

Its remarkable diversity of landscapes and architecture allows Morocco to double for locations across the Middle East, North Africa and beyond. From traditional villages and historic kasbahs to modern cityscapes, dramatic mountain ranges, vast deserts and unspoilt beaches, the country offers an impressive range of settings.

Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Ouarzazate and Tangier are among the country’s principal filming destinations. Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa”, is particularly well known for its established film studios, desert landscapes and proximity to historic locations.

Morocco also benefits from experienced local crews, established production infrastructure, competitive production costs and excellent connections to major European cities.

Its combination of authentic locations, reliable production resources and geographical diversity makes Morocco an attractive destination for international productions of all sizes.

Climate

Morocco enjoys a varied climate, making it possible to film in different environments throughout the year.

The coastal regions, including Casablanca, Rabat and Essaouira, benefit from relatively mild temperatures, while inland cities such as Marrakech experience hot, dry summers and generally pleasant spring and autumn conditions.

The Atlas Mountains offer spectacular scenery, with snow possible at higher elevations during winter, while the Sahara region provides dramatic desert landscapes and generally dry conditions, although temperatures can vary considerably between day and night.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are particularly popular filming periods, offering comfortable temperatures across many parts of the country.

With its combination of sunshine, coastal environments, snow-capped mountains and desert landscapes, Morocco can accommodate an exceptional variety of creative briefs throughout the year.

Our Partner has built an elite track record by supporting and executive-producing some of the most logistically complex and high-budget European and international film productions shot in North Africa. Their landmark credits feature massive multi-million dollar projects, including the sweeping historical epic De Gaulle (Parts 1 & 2), the major box-office hit Les Bodin’s en Thaïlande (fully executed in Moroccan locations), and the highly acclaimed drama 13J13N, representing tens of millions of MAD in local production spend.

Global networks and studios choose our Partner for their hyper-reactive workflow, delivering instant turnaround on location scouting, casting lookbooks, and securing official fast-track filming permits from the CCM (Centre Cinématographique Marocain). They provide exclusive access to elite, fully bilingual (English/French-speaking) local crews who are experts in large-scale set management, heavy stunts, and western safety protocols. By combining premier local coordination with highly precise budgeting, they ensure that the highest international production values are achieved under the most competitive day rates.

Tax Breaks & Incentives

Morocco offers an attractive cash rebate programme for qualifying international film and audiovisual productions, administered by the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre (CCM).

The incentive provides a rebate of 30% on eligible local expenditure for approved productions, subject to the programme’s requirements.

Qualifying productions can include feature films, scripted television series, television films, documentaries and certain other audiovisual projects.

Minimum Budget Requirement

To qualify for the programme, productions must generally meet the following conditions:

  • Minimum eligible expenditure in Morocco of MAD 10 million (approximately £800,000, depending on exchange rates).
  • At least 18 days of production activity in Morocco, which may include set construction.
  • Submission of an application and supporting documentation to the CCM before filming begins.
  • Compliance with the programme’s eligibility and approval requirements.

The incentive is primarily aimed at qualifying film and audiovisual projects, rather than standard advertising commercials.

Commercial productions can nevertheless benefit from Morocco’s competitive production costs, established infrastructure and experienced local crews.

All incentives are subject to official approval, and eligibility should be confirmed with the CCM and the local production service company during the budgeting stage.
