Climate
Covering an enormous geographical area, the United States offers virtually every climate and seasonal condition imaginable, making it an extremely versatile destination for filming throughout the year.
California enjoys a predominantly Mediterranean climate along much of its coastline, with warm, dry summers and generally mild winters. Southern California is particularly popular for its relatively reliable sunshine and favourable filming conditions.
Florida and the southeastern states experience subtropical climates, with hot, humid summers and mild winters, while New York, Chicago and the northeastern states offer four distinct seasons, including colourful autumn foliage and snowy winter landscapes.
The southwestern states, including Arizona, Nevada and parts of Utah, provide dramatic desert environments, generally dry conditions and extensive sunshine, although summer temperatures can be extremely high.
The Rocky Mountains, Alaska and northern states offer alpine scenery, forests and winter snow, while Hawaii provides lush tropical landscapes, volcanic terrain and warm temperatures throughout much of the year.

Tax Breaks & Incentives
The United States offers a wide variety of film and television production incentives, with programmes administered primarily at state level rather than through a single nationwide scheme.
Incentives vary considerably between states and can include transferable or refundable tax credits, cash rebates and other forms of financial assistance.
Some states offer particularly competitive programmes designed to attract domestic and international film and television productions.
California – operates a Film & Television Tax Credit programme designed to encourage qualifying productions to film within the state. The programme provides tax credits for eligible feature films, television series and other qualifying productions, with rates and requirements varying according to the type of production. Its expanded programme provides up to $750 million in annual funding, with additional provisions supporting certain production activities and eligible projects.
Georgia – established itself as one of the USA’s leading production destinations, particularly for feature films and television. The state offers a base transferable tax credit of 20% on qualifying production expenditure, with an additional 10% promotional uplift available to eligible productions. Productions must generally meet a minimum qualifying expenditure of $500,000 within the state.
Other States – several other states, including New York, New Jersey, New Mexico, Louisiana and Illinois, operate their own film and television production incentive programmes. The financial benefits, eligible expenditure, minimum budgets, application procedures and qualifying production types vary between locations.
Commercial Productions – unlike many international film incentive programmes, certain US states also offer incentives that can include qualifying television commercials and advertising productions. Eligibility varies by state, and commercial projects may be subject to different requirements from feature films and television series. Productions should confirm current incentive availability, qualifying expenditure and application requirements with the relevant state film office before budgeting or commencing production.
